Heart surgery is a
procedure that has a fatal risk if not done correctly. Therefore, always make
sure to consult with a team of doctors who deal with you about the details of
the course of the operation, including what should and should not be done until
after. While discussing, you can also ask them to do it during the day.
Because, a study found that heart surgery during the day is safer than at other
times. Why?
Heart surgery is more successful and much safer during the day than in the morning
Major operations such as
heart surgery are generally carried out in the morning. Even so, reports from
the University of Lille, France, actually state something different: heart
surgery is more effective if done in the afternoon.
The study involved nearly
600 patients with cardiac dysfunction who were then divided into two groups
based on their operating schedule, namely morning and afternoon. After that,
the researchers monitored the patient's condition for approximately 500 days
after surgery.
The study found that the
risk of postoperative heart complications (such as stroke and heart failure)
decreased by 50 percent in the group of patients who performed heart surgery
during the day.
Why is that?
Every organ of your body
has certain schedules when the organ works more optimally or just rests. This
is related to the body's biological clock, which is also called the circadian
rhythm.
The biological clock
follows all changes in physical, mental, and human behavior in a 24-hour cycle.
A person's biological clock can determine the sleep cycle, hormone production,
body temperature, hunger, and various other bodily functions - including the work
of the heart.
Circadian rhythms are
influenced by light conditions in the environment around you. Laboratory
results state that cardiac cells work more effectively during the day.
The experts also
mentioned that the heart muscles work better during the day, which can increase
the chances of successful surgery. In addition, recovery of heart cells is also
better during the day than in the morning or evening.
However, this must still
be studied and tested further. Because, there are still many other factors that
influence the success of heart surgery.
They also stated that the
chance of successful surgery was also related to genes in the body. Certain
genes that some patients have make their heart cells work better during the
day.
Always consult with your doctor first
Although indeed this
research states that daytime is the right time, of course this is back to the
condition of each patient and your team of doctors who know the best schedule
for you.
Therefore, to find out
when the heart surgery schedule is the best for you, discuss and consult this
with your doctor.
